2024-04-02

Qingming Festival, also known as the Tomb-Sweeping Day, the Spring Outing Festival, the Third Month Festival, or the Ancestor Worship Festival, is an ancient traditional holiday of the Chinese nation and one of the most important days for ancestral rites—marking the time to honor ancestors and visit family graves.

Qingming Festival originates from ancient ancestor worship and spring ritual customs, blending both natural and cultural elements. It serves as both a significant seasonal marker in the natural calendar and a cherished traditional holiday. Alongside Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival, Qingming is regarded as one of China's four major traditional festivals.

In addition, Qingming Festival features a variety of traditional customs and activities, including spring outings, swinging, cuju (an ancient form of football), polo, and willow-branch planting. Among these, "taiqing" refers to a springtime excursion into nature, allowing people to soak in the beauty of the season, breathe in the fresh air, and reconnect with the wonders of the natural world. Flying kites is also one of the festival's cherished traditions—people believe that letting go of a kite can help release their bad luck while attracting good fortune.
